What skills are most important for a job like yours?

When you talk about skills, it's important to define what you mean. I'd say there are tangible and intangible skills, just like in any other role.

Let's discuss the tangible skills. In a role like mine, you need experience. This is a senior role, but these are things you develop over time. You gain experience by seeing situations before and knowing how to deal with them.

This is why someone like Tom Brady is so good at what he does; he's been to numerous Super Bowls. He's seen everything and knows all the things that can happen. Tangible skills also include expertise in data platforms and project management, as well as solutioning.

Intangible skills are also crucial. Empathy is one, knowing what not to say in a meeting that might derail it or prevent you from hitting your agenda items.

Other intangible skills include simple things like saying good morning and asking how someone is. Taking a moment before a meeting to be human, ask about people's weekends, and then get down to business.

People really respect emotional intelligence, or EQ. So, while tangible skills like data analysis and understanding how different parts of a system or team work are essential, the intangible skills are perhaps equally or more important.
