What skills are most important for a job like yours?
Communication, understanding, and really being able to get inside the head of my clients. It's knowing what they're going to ask for before they even ask it. This involves understanding how they write, the focus of the course, and the game in general. It also means understanding the character arc and effectively communicating that to the actor.
A lot of times, I'll have a writer from the game development company in the room with me, and I really value their presence. These are their words, and I'm helping to bring them to life. However, their explanations can sometimes be quite long-winded.
Therefore, having effective communication skills is essential. Being concise and clear ensures the actor, who might only be working for a four-hour stint, doesn't get lost with too much information.
Communication is key. Additionally, having a friendly demeanor is important. I'm complimented on this often, and I think it's because I don't take myself too seriously.
I want to create a relaxed and conducive environment for art to come forward. I don't want actors to feel stifled in any way. I want them to be able to breathe and have a good time. I believe the best performances come from that.
