What skills are most important for a job like yours?
Okay. Key skills for a publicist are strong communication and writing abilities. If I had to name two, I'd say exceptional organization and project management skills are essential.
You'll always be working on more than one project, with multiple emails flying around about various things. Being able to compartmentalize and organize is key.
Creative and strategic thinking are also important; critical thinkers thrive in this job. This means having the foresight to get ahead of an issue.
We're always solving issues, but if you can prevent them, that's huge. For example, if someone says something in an interview that might not play well, or if there's a controversial character in a movie, knowing how to get ahead of it is critical.
It's also important to stay calm under pressure. This industry is fast-paced and unpredictable, and emotions often run high. Being able to handle that emotionally is crucial.
Finally, managing and maintaining media relations is a fundamental skill. It's so important to have conversations with journalists. If you ever need their help because of a bad interview or a potentially negative article about your film, you need those relationships to call them and ask how to fix it.
So, if I had to pick three strong skills, they would be communication, critical thinking, and relationship building.
