What does a day in the life of a publicity lead look like?
As a publicist or PR lead, my typical day can vary significantly from one day to the next. Overall, I'd describe it as dynamic and fast-paced.
I often interview candidates looking to join the industry. I always tell them that PR is a 24/7 job. It involves constant calls, texts, emails, and travel, so you need to be reachable at all times.
On a normal day, I immediately check my phone for urgent emails that might have come in overnight, especially since we have international communications. This ensures I'm aware of any "fire drills" or high-priority issues.
I then review overnight media coverage to prepare for my meetings. These meetings are with talent, filmmakers, or internal teams. We always want to ensure that as PR professionals, we present ourselves well and are knowledgeable.
My day includes numerous meetings, perhaps with the team to discuss campaign progress, brainstorm new ideas, and plan next steps. The rest of my day is likely spent sending emails, coordinating interviews for talent, and pitching stories to journalists.
It might even involve flying out to cover an event in person, such as a red carpet or a smaller press day. The key takeaway is that no two days are the same, and there's always something happening.
Even when traveling or working an event, I prioritize communicating with stakeholders on the project.
