What are your main responsibilities within your role?
Absolutely. As a charter school principal in my last year, I oversaw all aspects of the school. This included operations, instruction, curriculum, and compliance. At the principal level, you're really overlooking a lot of compliance.
The district has many requests for reportables that you have to submit quarterly. This takes a good portion of time. However, the things I enjoyed the most were really instruction and curriculum. That was a passion.
That's what really drove me into administration: math curriculum, instruction, and how to devise a way to instruct students who had large gaps in their understanding of the curriculum. It was about addressing that grade level and figuring out how to work backward to get their understanding up to grade level.
Operations is also a huge part. A principal indirectly sees operations. There's typically a director of operations or someone doing that. I was a director of operations before being a principal, so I knew that role very well. Essentially, that includes nutrition, making sure kids have food, how they get on campus, and the bus schedule. Does it all make sense and fit together with your program? Do you have an after-school program?
I would say the last part of this would be hiring and making sure you have the right people in the building.
