Favorite Parts Of Working In The Education Industry As A Charter School Principal

Alma, a charter school principal and administrator, finds the most rewarding aspect of the education industry to be "the impact that I can make on a community," specifically citing the ability to "track" students' progress and "be a resource" in their future development, even into college. This is deeply personal for Alma, as the school was co-founded in Alma's childhood neighborhood, allowing for a direct and lasting connection with the community.

What do you enjoy most about being in your industry?

I love the impact I can make on a community. I believe in being local to the community, so I co-founded the school in my childhood neighborhood, blocks from my parents' home where I grew up. That was definitely on purpose.

I wanted to see a direct impact from my work, on paper and on the computer. I was thinking through how to do things in the school to help my community develop and flourish, because those kids are going to grow up to be high schoolers and adults within those city blocks.

I wanted to make sure I was making an impact for the better. That's really what I enjoy about the industry. Even now, my first group of kids in Houston are in their first years of college, and I can still track them. I can ask what they're doing and be a resource.

I really just love that connection with people and their futures, and helping them craft what they want to do and develop their dreams. That's, I think, the best part of this industry.
