What did you do in undergrad to set you up for success in your career?
I worked in the Writing Center at my college. This actually helped with my writing skill sets, even though I was majoring in economics, which is pretty technical. I was helping other students, but also myself learn how to be a better communicator and writer.
By the time I finished college, I was really interested in philosophy or art history. I wanted to expand outside of one niche major, especially one that was so technical.
I also participated in club sports, like captain of our club lacrosse team. That was a fun way to have your brain work in different ways. If I had only done technical things like finance clubs, I feel like I would have missed an opportunity to get to know classmates in different fields.
I also learned foundational skill sets and gained diversity of thought. Exposure to other people and other ways of looking at things, like my art history class, taught me frameworks to develop a perspective. Being able to break down something creative into its pieces multiplies your individual skill sets, allowing you to do more.
I am so happy that I went to a liberal arts school. It gave me the opportunity to learn about different avenues and ways of thinking about something.
