Adrian, taking you back to your time at UCLA. What did you do in undergrad that set you up for success in your career?
I got the chance to go back to UCLA yesterday. As I was looking around, I thought about all the things I wish I could have done differently.
But I really did get the chance to explore a lot at UCLA. I think that's one of the great things about college – you have opportunities to get involved in clubs or organizations. It's never too late to do that, even if you're in your senior year.
You can still join a club or even play Quidditch if you want. For me, it started with exploring different things I liked and talking to different people. I heard about different career paths and experiences, and considered where they might fit with my own.
In my senior year, I did a lot of interviews and tried on different hats, picturing myself in those roles. One thing that stood out was when I was recruited for TFA. Shane, one of the founders, interviewed me.
I had heard of Teach for America but wasn't very familiar with it. Shane explained everything, and I asked lots of questions about staying on track and what a typical day is like. She patiently explained every detail.
I think that really helped me figure out if it was the right path for me. Being curious is probably the biggest thing for a young person or a student. Ask questions about any field you're wondering about and try different things out.
