What is one lesson you have learned that has proven significant in your career?
This is a tough one. It's really difficult to narrow it down to one lesson.
In general, I think building a good network is essential. This isn't exclusive to risk management; it really applies to pretty much all careers.
Building a good network and identifying some good mentors is key. If you have an idea of the path you want to go down, find someone in a role you want in five years and take them on as a mentor. Then, find someone in a role you want in ten years and have them mentor you.
This is probably the most effective way to efficiently grow. You can read books and speculate about the best skills and roles, but speaking with someone already in that position will give you a ton of insights on what to do and what not to do.
So, build your network and identify people you look up to. Not everyone has time to serve as a mentor, but they can usually help in some capacity or refer you to someone else. Finding the right mentors is critical to reaching your goals.
