What do you enjoy most about being in your current role?

We often joke that my role as a co-compliance manager in ethics and compliance was like being the company's police. People would say things like, "I don't want to talk to you, you're going to get me in trouble."

My risk management role supporting the HR team was similar. We asked people to go through procedures and follow policies, which in some cases would delay the start of an engagement or make things more complicated. However, I always took pride in knowing that we weren't doing anything unnecessary or going against business goals.

We were working with people to ensure they were acting compliantly so they wouldn't get in trouble. This is important because there are other agencies and regulatory bodies, like GDPR in Europe, that apply scrutiny to these matters, especially concerning data privacy.

These regulations are vital not just for employees but also for customers, as we are custodians of their data. Being compliant and having best practices in place was often the best thing for the business.

What I enjoyed most about my role was working with people to solve problems. Even though I have a background in risk, compliance, and accounting, I learned a lot about various business units. This was because I often spoke with salespeople, engineers, and government relations professionals to understand their work. We would then help them follow best practices.

I really enjoyed constantly meeting new people and learning new things. Sometimes I learned about cool projects that were underway, things I didn't even know were happening. I would say the broad exposure to different areas of the business was a significant aspect of the role.
