Hey Adan, could you walk me through your career path? Start with your experiences in college and any internships or jobs you had. Specifically, how did you land that first job for your current role?

So, I definitely did very different things during college versus what I ended up doing. My internships in college were all in government. I did Congressional internships both in D.C. and in my home district.

I also did campaign internships, where I did a lot of canvassing – going door to door to get people excited about candidates. Aside from official internships, experiences that led me where I am today involved tutoring and community service, education-focused events in South Philly and Northeast Philly.

These are communities in Philadelphia with many immigrants, low-income residents, and people of color. I worked a lot in schools doing college access work, tutoring, and helping hopeful college students understand how they can attain access to education.

This led to my first job out of college as a middle school math teacher through Teach for America. If you're involved in anything education-related, you know Teach for America finds you. I met with a recruiter, went through their extensive process, and got in.

I worked a couple of years as a middle school math teacher before joining the recruitment world. I focused on recruiting new teachers, people who might not have considered teaching without my conversations.

Last year, I switched to supporting schools with staffing solutions in general. With COVID, there was a huge surge of educators leaving the profession, leaving empty classrooms. So, my day-to-day job is to ensure as many classrooms as possible have a high-quality educator.
