What is one lesson that you have learned that has proven significant in your career?
One lesson I've learned is how to maintain relationships. Over time, you make friends and try to keep them. Social media can be both a help and a hindrance in maintaining friendships.
Being able to maintain relationships within a work setting adds another dimension. How do you do this with clients? How do you do it within your team and with coworkers?
How do you foster these connections across different teams and exert influence? I think this has definitely propelled me to where I am now.
Another lesson I've learned is to be interested and motivated to learn. If you're passionate about something, it's much easier to accomplish your goals.
Even if you're not passionate, try to find ways to learn more or gain more from an experience. Much of this experience and these lessons were built up before I started working full-time.
For example, you might take required courses you aren't interested in. To pass, you have to figure out how to motivate yourself to understand the material.
Or consider undergraduate research or projects with professors or graduate assistants. Knowing how to navigate those dynamics is also a skill. These sorts of skills have built up and proved invaluable throughout my career.
