What skills are most important for a job like yours?
Some important skills to have include relationship building. This involves knowing how to build from the ground up and maintain those relationships through rapport. It's about truly understanding specific merchants' needs, not taking a one-size-fits-all approach to every client.
You need to know their pain points and how the platform can offer solutions. Strategic thinking is also essential. I often provide recommendations based on trends I observe, whether it's general e-commerce knowledge or specific insights related to a merchant's sector.
For instance, if a merchant sells clothing, I can gather insights from that industry. I also consider their own sales performance or refund performance, which is visible in their merchant dashboard. So, alongside strategic thinking, I'd add data analysis.
Knowing how to present that data is also crucial. Speaking of presentation skills, I think they are quite important, especially in an external-facing role. It's important to know how to present myself and the brand effectively.
Being able to work in a team and collaborate across departments is also a pretty important skill. This is especially true when working with our product and engineering teams.
I'd also mention confidence. Part of my job responsibility, at one point, was to bring on new sellers. This meant not being afraid to reach out via email or phone to start a relationship.
